The Rich Get Richer

IDC issued a report this week on worldwide PC shipments. Most media
outlets focused on either Dell's number one position (barely edging out
HP) or the fact that overall sales are up -- or both. They missed the
real story.

IDC reported that Dell grabbed 17.8 percent of the PC market with sales
of 5,931,000 units, while HP won 16.2 percent by selling 5,376,000 PCs.

Dell and HP are and have been so close that, in any given quarter,
either could claim the number one spot. It will be one or the other for the
foreseeable future.

Yes, PC sales are up, and that's good news. But it's not unexpected
news, because after a long period of depressed sales the pressure to buy
new equipment to replace aging and obsolete systems grows. A surge in
sales is overdue.

The real story, which most media missed, is that three very distinct
tiers have emerged, and the difference in size and market power among
those tiers is growing fast.

The biggest PC companies -- again, Dell and HP -- are rapidly pulling
away from all other players. Together, they averaged a spectacular 21
percent growth over last year.

The second tier, consisting of IBM, Fujitsu Siemens and Toshiba,
averaged just under 10 percent growth. (In total unit sales, all three
companies in the second tier were still well under HP alone; there is already
a great deal of space between the number two and number three player.)

The third tier -- everybody else -- remained basically flat (-0.2
percent "growth").

Assuming current trends, within three years Dell and HP will be
mega-players that own more than half the market. The second tier companies
will still be struggling to gain a two-digit percentage, and the also-rans
will be dropping like flies. - Mike Elgan

Inside HP This Week

Internet Architect Joins HP Labs: David Reed, described by Salon.com as
an "electrical engineer, computer scientist and one of the architects
of the Internet" and by Intranet Journal as "an Internet 'graybeard,'
there at the beginning when the first wires were connected with duct
tape," can now add to his resume HP Labs. Reed has been named an HP Fellow,
reporting to Patrick Scaglia, vice-president of the Internet and
Computing Platforms Research Center at HP Labs, according to the labs' Web
site. He will maintain his position as adjunct professor in the Viral
Communications group at the MIT Media Lab and will co-direct the MIT
Communications Futures Program.

Why Alpha's Omega Makes Sense
Then Compaq CEO Michael Capellas decided in March 2001 to abdicate
Alpha and adopt Itanium. A variety of factors went into the decision. With
OpenVMS now being ported to the Itanium architecture, and not the Alpha
platform, all of this bodes well for HP and its hundreds of thousands
of loyal OpenVMS customers.
